Stargazing

Stargazing in Hawaii

Jon Lomberg, one of the world’s best-known artists inspired by astronomy, hosts Kona Village Resort’s Stargazing Program.

At Kona Village Resort, once the home of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village, guests are able to learn from Lomberg about the brilliant stars that fill the Hawaiian skies. He shares legends of old, how Hawaiians navigated vast ocean distances using the stars as their guides, and how Hawaii’s Big Island is now home to some of the latest ground breaking discoveries in astronomy.

Kona Village is honored to have the world-famous Lomberg as their resident astronomer. Lomberg’s mural of the Milky Way Galaxy is at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum. He has worked as a consultant for both the TV series “Cosmos” and the film “Contact.” This unassuming man worked for more than 20 years as principal artistic collaborator with the late astronomer Carl Sagan.

In 1998, an asteroid near Mars was named Asteroid Lomberg in recognition of Lomberg’s achievements in the field of science communications. His vast amount of knowledge and experience has been shared with Kona Village Resort guests since 1992 in a lively, captivating, even humorous way, that adds an unexpected memory to cherish for the many hundreds that have been privileged to join his stargazing sessions. His sessions are scheduled on a complimentary basis several times each month based on what is happening in Hawaii's skies.
